What Is Discretion?
The Hebrew word in Proverbs 2:11 (מְזִמָּה, mezimmah) means purposeful thought, careful planning, the ability to think before acting. It is the opposite of impulsiveness. Discretion is the discipline of pausing, considering, and choosing wisely.
The Proverbs 11 Warning
Proverbs 11:22 is striking in its bluntness. A beautiful woman without discretion is like a gold ring in a pig's nose — the value is real, but it is completely out of place. Beauty without wisdom is wasted. Gifts without character are dangerous.
Discretion is not silence. It is the wisdom to know what to say, when to say it, and when to say nothing at all.
