Dressed Before You Leave the Mirror

"In like manner also, that women adorn themselves in modest apparel, with shamefacedness and sobriety; not with broided hair, or gold, or pearls, or costly array." — 1 Timothy 2:9 (KJV)

Modesty begins in the heart, long before it shows up in the closet. What you choose to put on is a reflection of what you have already decided inside — about who you are, whose you are, and what you are communicating to the world.

What Shamefacedness Actually Means

The Greek word translated "shamefacedness" (αἰδώς, aidōs) does not mean shame in the modern sense of self-loathing or embarrassment. It means a reverent restraint — an inner sense of what is appropriate, what honors God, and what protects the dignity He has placed in you.

It is the quality of a woman who knows her worth so well that she does not need to put it on display. She is not hiding. She is guarding.

Modesty is not the absence of beauty. It is beauty under the authority of God.

Sobriety of Mind

Paul pairs shamefacedness with sobriety (σωφροσύνη, sōphrosynē) — soundness of mind, self-control, clear thinking. A woman who dresses with sobriety has thought about what she is doing and why. She is not dressing reactively, to fit in or stand out. She is dressing intentionally, as an act of worship.

Before You Leave the Mirror

The question is not only "Does this look good?" The question is "Does this reflect who I am in Christ?" Those two questions will sometimes give you the same answer. But when they do not, you already know which one to follow.

You are dressed before you leave the mirror — not just in fabric, but in conviction. Wear both well.
